Holiday Desserts

The holidays bring a time of festivities and celebration. They also bring a lot of delicious food.

One of the perks of the holidays is the delicious spread of desserts. Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of the main holidays famous for bringing an onslaught of delicious goodies. With only few weeks between them, it is no wonder people gain a little weight from indulging their sweet tooth.

Thanksgiving may be mostly about the turkey, but it has its fare share of tempting desserts. The main holiday dessert is pie. Pumpkin pie is the most traditional Thanksgiving pie, but many others – including apple and coconut crème – also are commonly served. This type of holiday dessert ranges from fruit pies to pecan pie. Some pies are served with whipped cream and others with ice cream.

Holiday desserts also are largely determined by what ingredients are in season. Pumpkin and carrot are two ingredients native to autumn, which is why they are largely used for Thanksgiving holiday desserts. Pumpkin is not only used for pie, but also to make pumpkin bars. These little pumpkin cakes are donned with cream cheese frosting. Carrot is used to make carrot cake, another popular Thanksgiving holiday dessert.

If Thanksgiving holiday desserts are all about pies, then Christmas holiday desserts are all about cookies. People tend to celebrate the Christmas season by organizing cookie swap parties. A wide variety of cookie recipes are used ranging from pecan balls, frosted sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, ginger snaps and peanut butter balls. Cookies also are baked into holiday shapes such as Christmas wreaths, angels, reindeer, gingerbread people, Christmas trees and Santa Clauses.

Gingerbread houses are another popular holiday dessert during Christmastime. This dessert is mainly popular for creating as a decoration rather than eating. The house is constructed from sheets of baked gingerbread. Icing is then used as paste to hold the house together. Different kinds of candy – from gumdrops to candy canes and shredded coconut – are used to decorate the house. After completion, this dessert is mainly used for decoration, although it still can be eaten.

Many different recipes can be found to make holiday desserts. Variations are available for those wanting low fat or low calorie versions of their favorite desserts. Just keep in mind that it is perfectly okay to indulge during the holidays.
